Periodontics Aventura, FL
Gums, or gingiva, are the tissues that support the teeth. Fibers called periodontal ligaments anchor the root of each tooth to its socket. You might not realize that the gums aren’t extremely secured to the teeth, as there is a shallow V-shaped gap (the sulcus) between the teeth and gums. When the tissues in that area become infected, it’s called periodontal disease and can become a serious condition if left untreated, causing a breakdown of the tissues supporting the tooth. The disease is called gingivitis if only the gums are affected; it’s called periodontitis when just the connecting tissues and bone are involved. Either way, an appointment with Dr. Wohlstein in our Aventura dental office will allow you to get the treatment needed for healthy teeth and gums.
